CKMA 93.7 FM RADIO STATION

CKMA, 93.7 FM – Mission – To promote the development of the Acadian cultural identity.

CKMA, also known as Radio MirAcadie, aims to inform, entertain and unite the francophone community of the Northumberland County, which is home to over 18,000 francophones.

The story of CKMA, AKA Radio MirAcadie, begins well before its opening day in 2007. At first, In the beginning of the 1980’s discussions and steps to build the Carrefour Beausoleil, a school and community center are ongoing. One of the founders sees more than a school and community center in Carrefour Beausoleil. Gilles Laplante believed that a community radio could offer much to the francophones of the Greater Miramichi.

However, it’s not until 1989 that a first comity for the community radio is established. For the following years, a mobile radio is born, it can be spotted in summer festivals of many cities and villages of the Northumberland County namely Miramichi, Baie Sainte-Anne, Néguac and Rogersville at the time. During those festivals, people of the community would suddenly become radio hosts. Summer festivals are how the community radio gained its popularity.

On September 24 2007, CKMA finally opens its doors after having tried for years to obtain a licence from CRTC.

This licence, however, came with a problem. Even though many residents from Néguac and the area were listening to the mobile radio and helped manage it, the village was not a part of the broadcast territory of CKMA. Néguac was already part of the broadcast area of Radio Péninsule, AKA CKRO, and the CRTC refused to have two entities offering the same service for the same region. After many long procedures, Néguac was finally included in the broadcast area of Radio MirAcadie.

Since 2015, CKMA works with community radios from St-Jean and Fredericton, CHQC, and  CJPN respectively. The three stations even trade their hosts between each other to have a more diversified programing while limiting expenses.
