CHQC 105.7 FM Radio Station

CHQC, 105.7 FM – Mission –  To promote the development of the Acadian cultural identity.

CHQC, also known as CHOC, aims to inform, entertain and unite the francophone community of the Greater Saint-Jean, which is home to over 18 000 francophones.

CHQC 105,7 FM is the only francophone radio station in Saint John and broadcasts from their studio located at the Samuel-de-Champlain school center. The community radio has been operating since 2007 and celebrated its tenth-anniversary last year. More than 20 volunteers help the radio by producing several shows and by promoting it. CHQC has more than 400-lifetime members as it runs on a cooperation system.

More than 19 000 residents of Saint John are bilingual and 7000 are francophones inclusively. Half of those people listen to the radio regularly. The Coopérative la Brise de la Baie’s Facebook page is visited by more than 10 000 people monthly and around 100 people take part in each contest.

The francophone population of Saint John increases at an unimaginable speed; the highest after the city of Dieppe. Two francophone schools are in the area (one in Saint John and the other in Quispamsis) and the radio is involved with students of both schools by organizing multiple activities with them. For example, by initiating the youth to the radio by showing them how the equipment works and by discussing many subjects with them on air, by organizing a radio camp with the students from Samuel-de-Champlain and by helping the student council organize an outdoor field day. The radio is the voice of francophones throughout the region and is growing just like its population.
